My main problem with mailing lists is that I can't read old messages in the same manner I read new messages. If I get interested in subject X, then I can just browse the 400 last messages in the newsgroup, and use the normal Gnus searching functions. If it's on a mailing list, I (more often than not) have to use some weird, exasperating web interface to the old messages.
