ah, yes... looking at the raw message which did not seem to decode, i
found that the subject was as follows:
Subject: Re: [Fwd: NEW charset!!! =?us-ascii?Q?=3D=3Fkoi8=2Dr=3FQ=3F=3DE2=3DD9=3DCC=3DCF=3F=3D=3A?= Re: KOI8]
so, it was double-encoded, and gnus correctly decoded it. sorry.
