I've now added some error checking for this specific situation, but it's
still just hiding the real error.

It'd be interesting to know whether you're running Exchange, too.  Going
to the "*nnimap ...*" buffer and evaluating

(nnimap-greeting nnimap-object)

should tell you what the server is.
