Are you needing to convert these back to '\n' | codes to make your setq work? It is not my gnus-format-specs per se, it is the gnus-format-specs that is generated by gnus-compile. I use different gnus-*-line-format strings for different groups, and I invoke gnus-compile every time I change the format strings. It is the Lisp code generated by gnus-compile that is being saved incorrectly. Yes, the `\n' sequences are being converted to newlines. Gnus apparantly parses .eld files line by line. When it sees the end of line it says, "this is the end of the Lisp form"... and then complains because of a malformed form. I can discount any kind of MULE conversion, since I am using a no-MULE XEmacs. -- Rat \ Do not use Happy Fun Ball on concrete.
