Something weird seems to have happened.  My gnus-summary-line-format
is "%C%U%R%z %10&user-date; %~(ignore 1)3t%B%(%[%-20,20f%]%) %s
"
and the my summary lines now look like

*R +        Tue (ignore 1)3t+[Maciej Matysiak     ] Re: %C in gnus-summary-line-format.

I can guess why the "*" appears at the beginning of the line but the
%~ seems to have broken something.
