I get these horribly formatted messages from the tech staff at my ISP.
The mime headers say:

But there is html content too. Only mentioned in another Mime header below.
I think they are using one of the online webmail sites, their mail
headers never include anything indicating the software used.
But before I start badgering them about there mail client, I wanted to
find out what gnus is supposed to do with this format.
What I see are usually a greeting line then maybe 5-6 empty lines,
then another line or two with another major gap then a message in what
looks like a long continuous line.

Not sure about the effects multipart might have, but is your fill-column
variable set to sensible values for that buffer? Was a problem for me
once...
