| One thing I dearly would like to see in future xGnus is the
| possibility to have gziped nnfolders (or any backend for that matter).

I believe this has been working for quite some time. Simply tell Gnus that
the file to be read is compressed and jka-compr should automagically do its
thing.

| How? A search for "compr" in the info-file revealed nothing.

Because it is entirely and automatically handled by jka-compr. That is,
turn on compressed file handling, compress your files, and Gnus will do the
right thing because jka-compr does the right thing for it.

It might be necessary to specify the compression extension in the group

Ok you people who has it working, tell me what to do :-)

I tried to create a nnfolder group arkiv.test.gz, it complained over
that the subdir arkiv/test didn't exist..

I created arkiv.test, gzipped it, restarted gnus.. no success..

Sounds like a problem with the nnmail-use-long-file-names variable.
It is probably set to nil, so it converts group names like
"arkiv.test" into the subdirectory arkiv/test. If you set
nnmail-use-long-file-names to non-nil, it will not convert group names
inot subdirectories.

Or, if you create the file arkive/test, gzip it, and restart gnus you
should be fine.

I don't believe you need to create the nnfolder group with the .gz
name. Just call it arkiv.test and it will do the right thing if the
arkiv/test (or arkiv.test) file is gzipped.

Sounds like this is the case, haven't touched that variable.. the
problem with changing it now is that I have a couple of nnfolder
groups in this format..

Nope I am not fine.. Create groupt arkiv.test, copy a bunch of
articles there, okee 3 articles, quit gnus, gzip, start gnus, try to
enter the group, no articles

jka-compr is loaded..

Anyone out there with it working and who can tell who you got it to
work?

I have it working with nnml. I have the following in my .emacs:

(require 'jka-compr)
(toggle-auto-compression 1)

that's all I needed to do.

Create a nnfolder:foo group, copy an article in it, exit gnus, gzip the foo
file to foo.gz, edit the active file and the .newsrc.eld file to say
test.gz, restart emacs, run gnus. This worked fine for me.

Subject closed.. gzip of nnfolders isn't implemented.. easily :-) or
something.. Time to take up the subject again..

Better support for gzipped nnfolders wanted, I the user don't want to
need to mess around in the .newsrc.eld and active file.. Though I do
it once a while.. heheheh..

Maybe some elisp to create a gzipped nnfolder group or something?

Why nnmh? Do you really need to use both Gnus and MH interchangeably
for managing your mail? That is the only reason to use nnmh over nnml...

Just curious.

This sounds interesting. I cooked up my own `manage your todo list

| Becaurse I use an external script to produce "Post-it"-like
| to-do-lists. It just produces a new file - with nnmh I don't need to
| do more processing then "ls | sort" to get the highest article
| number.

An nnml directory looks exactly like an nnmh directory with the addition of
.overview, which does not normally show up with ls.

By the by, since ls normally sorts alphanumerically, `ls -1 | tail -1` is
probably the fastest way to do this.

| Besides, there seems to be a bug in nnmh...

What bug would this be?

Or "ls -1tr | tail -1"

Woops. Scratch that. That won't work unless the numerical order is
the same as the chronological order.

| Using procmail would be overkill and doing things twice. I can send you
| the script if you want to better understand how it works.

You do not need to use procmail to write the new message. All you need to
do is have your todo script put the new message where procmail would put it
if you were using procmail instead of the same directory.

Yeah... I was looking at a directory with all the messages having the same
number of significant digits in their names. Of course, if you are going
to use sort in this, it might be faster to use "ls -1f | sort -n | head
- -1" instead (-f tells ls not to sort the output).

ObPointless: '-1' is the default behaviour when sending 'ls' output to
a pipe. It's been this way forever (or thereabounts :))

ITYM `ls -1r | head -1` ;-)

ObNotPointless: '-1' is a Good Thing to include just in case your (or
someone else's) shell has an alias for ls which includes switches like -C
or -F which will override the fallback to -1 behaviour when piping ls
output. Or, in other words, do not assume that 'default' behaviour will
always work, because it will not.

I thought of that, but I cannot prove that all implementations of ls have
