After kicking this around some more, I found the problem. From the
0.76 ChangeLog:
1999-02-10 02:29:28 Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen <larsi@gnus.org>
* mail-source.el (mail-source-fetcher-alist): Remove apop.
* nndoc.el (nndoc-type-alist): Remove MIME-digest.
(nndoc-mime-digest-type-p): Removed.
When I ran the gnus-summary-read-document, nndoc-article-type came
back as mime-parts as opposed to mime-digest.
Why was nndoc-mime-digest-type-p removed?

I just switched from 0.69 to 0.83.
Is digest splitting being handled differently now? I do a
gnus-summary-read-document on a digest and get:
[Informal Aliyah ] 19-Apr <* mixed> TACHLIS digest 1734
[Informal Aliyah ] 19-Apr <1 text>
[Informal Aliyah ] 19-Apr <2.* digest>
[Yael Meyer ] 18-Apr Re: Custom questions
[Alexis Rosoff ] 18-Apr
[Stuart Goldstein] 18-Apr Nile Perch
[jakes@netvision.] 18-Apr A 'Fishy Tale'-Important
[Gossels Lenny ] 18-Apr RE: bob and irina
[Gossels Lenny ] 18-Apr RE: Nile Perch
[Geoffrey S. Mend] 18-Apr Re: bob and irina

The first 3 lines didn't used to show up when I did the
gnus-summary-read-document. Now when I run to
gnus-summary-sort-by-subject it has no effect.
Any way around this?

Because I thought that the general nndoc MIME multipart handler was
good enuff.
