The incoming mail marked read bug is almost certainly one of the many
bugs caused by trying to store the metadata on the imap server rather
than in .newsrc.eld.

The code which is run when exiting a group probably changes the marks
on all of the mail in the group rather than just on the mail of which
gnus is already aware.

If you run g, wait for some new mail to arrive, and only then enter the
group, the new mail does not show.  But, I bet, that unseen mail still
gets marked read (or otherwise modified) when you exit the group.  And
thus appears to gnus to be old the next time you enter that group.
