I've been using Gmane for a while now for a number of the mailing lists
I belong to, and overall, I'm happy with the results.

I'm wondering, however, if there's a way to configure a group so that
articles that are posted get sent via SMTP directly to the mailing list,
but that I read the messages using NNTP from news.gmane.org.
The reason for this is that sometimes I notice a significant time lag
between the time that Gmane accepts my message and the time that it
shows up in the mailing list. However, messages that appear in the
mailing list via other sources seem to get back to me in a timely
fashion via NNTP from Gmane.
I'm pretty sure that I can hack something up to force a post to go to a
particular email address via SMTP even though the select method is nntp,
but I'm wondering if this capability already exists within Gnus.

Set the `to-address' group parameter.

The documentation refers to this as "a pain" and that it works "most of
the time" (see below). Or is the "pain" and "most of the time" part of
it only associated with the `gnus-mailing-list-groups' variable, and not
the `to-address' parameter?

`gnus-mailing-list-groups'
If your news server offers groups that are really mailing lists
gatewayed to the NNTP server, you can read those groups without
problems, but you can't post/followup to them without some
difficulty. One solution is to add a `to-address' to the group
parameters (*note Group Parameters::). An easier thing to do is
set the `gnus-mailing-list-groups' to a regexp that matches the
groups that really are mailing lists. Then, at least, followups
to the mailing lists will work most of the time. Posting to these
groups (`a') is still a pain, though.

I don't know what the manual referring to. I use `to-address' all the
time with no pain.

The latter, perhaps. The "pain" in posting to a newsgroup with
to-address set consists of remembering to do the `a' command from
within the group, or to remember to put point on the group name and do
`C-u a'.
I always confuse to-list and to-address, so perhaps you need to swap
the two in the above paragraph. I'm talking about the one that's
documented to change the `a' command.
