They were supposed to speed things up, sure. But if Gnus is spending
so much time on them, is it clear that they *do* speed things up?
Expanding and collapsing would be gone if we stopped using integers;
merging could still be done quickly with obarrays, I think.
prin1-to-string is helpful - or else we could say that articles must
be identified by strings, which probably wouldn't be much of a burden
on backends.
