"strings" frequently works as well as anything else I've tried.  There 
is also word2x, which tries to translate word6 to either html or
latex, and mswordview, which tries to do word 8.  mswordview provides
a network interface, so you can try it out without installing it.  In
both cases, you get the content, but frequently not much of the
formatting.
