NNTP commands issued when Gnus detects new groups?

NNTP commands issued when Gnus detects new groups?

I'm running pgnus-0.80 under XEmacs-21.2-beta4.

I'm retrieving my news via the `nntp' select method, and I'm wondering
if the standard behavior of this select method includes the issuing
of any of the following NNTP commands when new newsgroups are detected:

  LISTGROUP, XOVER, XHDR, STAT, HEAD, BODY, or ARTICLE

The reason I'm asking is because I am using leafnode as my nntp server,
and I am noticing that leafnode seems to be behaving as if one or
more of these commands have been issued whenever new newsgroups show
up.  I have posted a query about this to the leafnode mailing list,
but I also want to ask here, in case Gnus might be issuing one or
more of these commands for new newsgroups.
