Hi,
It seems that the latest snapshot is very old....
,----
| FTP Directory: ftp://ftp.gnus.org/pub/gnus/snapshots/
| Parent Directory
| gnus-CURRENT-20011022.tar.gz . . Oct 22 02:02 1779k

Is the process broken, it is it our DNS? I need to know before I complain
to out sysadmins here.
Thanks,
Yair Friedman.

Auto snapshot generation has been broken since the gnus servers were
switched. AFAIK cvs is the only way at the moment to get current oort
updates.
Note to big gnus dudes: move to sourceforge?
Cheers -

Oops. Looks like I forgot to copy /var/spool/cron from the old Quimby
to the new Quimby. Fixed now.

One more oops, /usr/lib/cvs/contrib/cvslog is not copied.

Darn. And now the old Quimby is offline. Does anybody have a copy of

As I recall, you were using my script or some modification thereof. I've
since significantly improved the script that you were using; the latest
version is available at:
<ftp://ftp.eyrie.org/pub/software/cvs/>
cvsprep is only necessary if you want to merge multidirectory commits into
a single mail message. See the INSTALLATION section of the embedded POD
documentation for details on how to set it up.
If you have diffstat available, this version can append some statistics
about the modifications involved in a commit.

Great! I've now installed it, and it seems to work perfectly.

Seems to be installed in Debian Potato without me having to ask...

Not perfectly. Though the log was posted, I still got a warning
cvslog: can't open /usr/local/cvsroot/CVSROOT/modules: No such file or
directory

Seems like a spurious warning from the cvslog script. I've just
commented it out now.

Huh. I just tried checking something out, and cvs told me that the
cvs lock was held. So I had a peek at the server, and cvslog was
using 100% CPU. I killed it, and now everything is OK again.
Checking in works as it should. Odd.

Is there a /usr/local/cvsroot/CVSROOT/modules file on quimby?
Or is there just the RCS file /usr/local/cvsroot/CVSROOT/modules,v?
Try logging in on quimby, as a user that is member of a group that has
write access to the CVSROOT directory, and do
cd /usr/local/cvsroot/CVSROOT/
co -r modules
Does that fix the problem?

Just "co", not "cvs co" (ie. the RCS "co" program).

It's a debian machine?
Log in as root, then:
apt-get update
apt-get install rcs
/bin/su larsi
cd /usr/local/CVSROOT/
co -r modules

"Fixed the symptoms instead of the cause", you mean...? ;-)
You will need a modules file in the CVSROOT directory in the
repository, if you plan to use CVS modules that aren't top level
directories in the repository, I think.

I don't think I plan on doing that, but I'm not well versed in CVS
lore.
Anyway:
larsi@quimby2:/usr/local/cvsroot/CVSROOT$ co -r modules

As long as it works for you, there's no point in digging deeper. :-)
Myself, I'm just waiting for
<http://subversion.tigris.org/>
to come of age, to be able to ditch CVS altogether.

Hmm... that's strange. Do you have a /usr/local/cvsroot/CVSROOT/modules,v
file? Maybe "cvs init" didn't create it?

The web page does look promising. They make all the right noises, and
certainly seem to address all the gripes I have with CVS, while they
seem to keep the essential goodness of CVS. (I few other VC projects
I've seen seem to spend much time doing counter-advocacy against CVS,
which is something that always makes me suspicious.)

Yes, but for Gnus there's really no reason to do that.
Most CVS repositories don't need modules. CVS repositories for a single
project in particular almost never need modules. You only *really* need
modules if you want to support easy download of just a portion of the tree
that doesn't directly correspond to a subdirectory, although they're
occasionally useful if you want to give alternate names to a portion of
the directory hierarchy.
I always use a modules file just to support cvslog; I rarely actually use
the module names. I just like the look of:
<news-config>/control.ctl
instead of:
leland/news/config/news/control.ctl
