Hello world,
Occasionally I hit 'g' when I'm still unplugged. Silly me, I
know. Unfortunately, gnus just says I have no mail and
sometimes I walk away. Is there a hook I could snag to do
something else, like (message "You're unplugged ya mamoron").

I do that all the time, and it should be no problem. It's nice to see
the nndraft:queue group growing, and growing, and...
Does Gnus do anything bad when you do that?

Yeah, that's true...

Nothing bad. That's why I asked about a hook, I don't really think
the default behavior is wrong, I'd just like a different behavior.
Right now it just says "Checking new news...done" and gives me
the mistaken impression that I've got no mail, could it say
"Checking new news, unplugged...done", instead?

You may have some plugged groups, so Gnus can't really say that.
