Subject: Abbreviating modeline items related to Gnus

Hi all,

I did some searching on the info for Gnus and the reference about mode
lines that I found only spoke about chopping Gnus contribution to it
by setting gnus-mode-non-string-length.

While this is useful, I'd like to get feedback from you guys on how I
could configure the actual strings that form the modeline
contribution, for instance, abbreviate the Message mode string that
goes into the modeline to Msg, hook a defun to abbreviate the main
method (or just remove it), a defun to massage the summary and article
modeline with regards.

I appreciate any pointers to variables or info nodes I missed, or
Lisp snippets :)

TIA,

        Nelson
