As we found out, if you tried paying from outside the US, it'll take Quite A While to get stuff rolling. But! I've now stumbled (well, Mastercard referred me to them) onto something called paynet.no, which does exactly what I want. I can take Visa (and Mastercard, as soon as they've processed the application), and just pump over some things via SSL to paynet, and they do the online credit card thingie. And the manual is written in LaTeX! How much more better can you get? It seems extremely easy to use -- the manual describes scripting the stuff with curl + openssl, and it looks very well thought out. Now it only remains to be seen whether it actually works...
