nnmaildir forgetting method

I'm using Oort Gnus from last week's CVS.  Whenever I restart Gnus,
every group I've subscribed to with nnmaildir has lost its message
history, and an asterisk is displayed.  If I try to enter one of
them from the group buffer, I see ``Trying to require a method that
doesn't exist.''

I can subscribe to them fine from the server buffer, and read them
shortly after, but Gnus seems to randomly forget about them once
I've gone around doing other things.  Here's what I have in .gnus:
     
     (setq gnus-secondary-select-methods
	        '((nnmaildir "sundries"
                         (directory "~/mail-groups")
                         (create-directory "../maildirs")
                         (directory-files nnheader-directory-files-safe)
                         (get-new-mail nil))
		  (nntp "news.vanderbilt.edu")
		  (nntp "news.gmane.org")))

What am I doing wrong?  I can't really think of a better way to
describe the problem.  The above error message is the only
reproducible problem I've seen.

I forgot I had changed the server name to ``sundries'' before the
last time I started Gnus.  Now things seem to be OK.

I updated by editing my newsrc.eld and replace-string'ing the old
and new values.  How could I have done that from within Gnus?
