That would be a syntax problem:

'(display . (not read expirable))
=> (display not read expirable)

So

'(display . (read))
=> (display read)

which means "set the variable `display' to the symbol `read'"; not
"set the `display' group parameter".

Anyway.  This means that the syntax would have to be something
special-cased, like

(display (param (read)))

where we reserve `param' as our symbol.
