That's kinda odd, since gnus-group-get-new-news calls
gnus-active-to-gnus-format, so it should be impossible for this to
happen.  Might be some kinda recursitivity issue.

Anyway:

This looks way too slow.  18 seconds to save the active file?  Are you 
sure you've byte-compiled everything?
