I get this weird message count:
1581677098: gmane.lisp.guile.user
Well, a weird message count is not too bad, but as a side effect my
.newsrc.eld file grows to 20MB and it's very slow to save the files.
I can remove the weird repeated data, but it returns, and it survived
several emacs upgrades.

Not to my knowledge, no. I think I disabled agent years ago. This issue
is recent.

Now I've expunged all data about the group from the .newsrc* files, but
previously, whatever I tried to do with the group, it was so slow as to
never terminate.
the data structure just contained a repeated pattern, like 7005-7005
over and over, about 20 mbytes. the situation occurred twice.
