Hi,
when your Emacs session, X Server or OS crashes while replying, the
auto-save file (.../drafts/#42#) will not have a `References:' header.
And so does the article if you recover and send the message. IMHO
news clients that don't generate proper `References:' headers (even if
it only happens from in case of an error) suck.
Therefore, I suggest to change the *default* value of
`message-generate-headers-first' to '(references) as a workaround.
Opinions? A proper solution would be to force writing the
`References:' even if `message-generate-headers-first' is nil somehow.
Bye, Reiner.

Agreed.

IMHO, a proper solution is to dump all the buffer-local varibables (for
the message buffer) in another file (so it gets autosaved). Say
drafts/env/42 or drafts/drafts/42-env, where 42 is the number, same as
in drafts/drafts.

I think that's a good idea.

I've set the default of message-generate-headers-first to
'(references) now.
If somebody implements the proper solution, we can change it back to
nil.
