I just had a look at gnus-ems.el. `gnus-article-display-xface' uses a `gnus-article-compface-xbm' variable, and it checks stuff and stuff. I think we should roll an uncompface.el library that does these checks, and just provides a `uncompface' function that can be used. We can use `gnus-article-display-xface' as a model.
