There have been questions on how to use one's own smilies in
gnu.emacs.gnus.
I think, it would be nice to ease the customization. Smiley-ems.el
could specify the image type in use via a variable. This simple patch
adds this:

I have made a few simple yellow xpm smilies on a lazy sunday
afternoon. If you like them, you can have them. :-)

To use them the user can simply insert ...
(setq smiley-regexp-alist '(("\\(:-?)\\)\\W" 1 "smile.xpm")
("\\(;-?)\\)\\W" 1 "blink.xpm")
("\\(:-[/\\]\\)\\W" 1 "wry.xpm")

("\\(:-|\\)\\W" 1 "indifferent.xpm")
("\\(#-)\\)\\W" 1 "dead.xpm")
("\\(:-]\\)\\W" 1 "forced.xpm")))
(setq smiley-image-type 'xpm)
... into his or her .gnus.

Actually, we can use
:type (image-type-from-file-header (nth 2 elt))
to auto-detect the type.

Those little faces look nice. If you want to contribute the images to
FSF, I can send you the assignment-request form.

As I remember Lars is talking with the author of original XEmacs's smilies
to sign papers for FSF. So what do we want to have in Gnus? I still use
original smilies from XEmacs inside GNU Emacs...

I've added these pictures under the etc/smilies directory. I'll use
the setting as the default if no one complains in a couple of days.
