Is anyone using agent?

I tried using agent last night, with xemacs 20.4 and pgnus 80, and am
having trouble getting it to work.

I think a lot of my troubles come from having stuff hanging around
from previous attempts to use agent, and I will try to clean all the
old stuff out tonight.

However, if anyone is using it who can send me a description of what
they really do, I would appreciate it.

I find the explanation of how to set up categories for downloading in
the manual particularly confusing.

Well, the agent works for me, and I basically just do what the
cookbook in the manual says...

The cookbook explains how to use the agent for both mail and news.  I
want to go on using my regular offline mail reading (fetchmail and
qmail) for mail, and try using the agent for news.  I have tried:

(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "news.std.com")) 

(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods 
      '((nnml "private"))) 
     (setq nnmail-spool-file "~/Mailbox") 

I have mail in that spool file, and gnus doesn't read it. 

Is there a way to read my mail from the local spool and news via the
agent from my isp?

(I have tried the cookbook, and seemed to have trouble getting the
mail sent.)

Could be a syntax issue, I think gnus expects an alist. Mine looks
like this [pgnus 80]:
(setq nnmail-spool-file
      '((pop 
	 :server "pop.server"
	 :user "jsaylor")
	(file
	 :path "/var/spool/mail/jsaylor")))

Accordingly, I would rewrite it like this:
(setq nnmail-spool-file 
        '((file
        :path (expand-file-name "~/Mailbox"))))

[also adding the expand-file-name call to ~/Mailbox to avoid twiddle
problems]
