I think it's slightly better to not pollute the global name-space.  I've
added a boundp check instead.  Does it work for you?

Strange, they're both bound in my version of XEmacs:

 "21.4 (patch 6) \"Common Lisp\" XEmacs Lucid"

`lpr-switches' is even mentioned in the XEmacs manual (in the 'Hardcopy
Output' node).
