I've got no answer to my posting with the Subject: charset for sending
mail of 15 Nov 1999, Message-ID: <uud7tcuqx6.fsf@nbsp.nsk.su>; yet it
is important for me to decide whether pgnus is a suitable mail tool
for Russian.
So far I was unable to send a message in koi8-r from pgnus. I can
post in iso-8859-* as I expect; but everything that I send in koi8-r
comes in iso-8859-5 (this message is an example).
Rmail with MULE does it as expected.
Can anyone send a koi8-r message from pgnus?
Is really so unimportant that pgnus fails to support the encoding
which is standard for e-mail in Russia?
Test koi8: проба

Do you read this mailing list? :) Roman Belenov <roman@nstl.nnov.ru>
asked the same question on 12 Nov 1999 (see <5779.991112@nstl.nnov.ru>)
and i already answered it (see <m3aeogyk4l.fsf@vvv.vsu.ru>).
Yes, pgnus IS a suitable mail tool for Russian. It already supports
koi8-r and ALL other possible charsets: the support is quite generic,
and not gnus-specific.
For example, this message sent from pgnus, comes in koi8-r.
To send messages in Russian in koi8-r instead of iso-8859-5, put the
following magic line into your ~/.emacs (or ~/.gnus) file:
(put-charset-property 'cyrillic-iso8859-5 'prefered-coding-system 'koi8-r)

Thank you, I've tried your recipe and it helps; though I think Roman
is right that this is an unobvious way, and thus this question is
bound to re-emerge again and again as somebody else would come to use
gnus+koi8.
I even doubt that this is a right way to do it; it quite suffices for
my needs, but it is imaginable that somebody would like to correspond
in different charsets in different groups: it may happen that some
Windows-specific mailing list is using CP-1251 (not for me!!). So I
too would expect this problem to be addressed at a group level, as
Roman did.

Here is another problem: my pgnus does not recognize charset="koi8-u",
which also is used for messages in Russian, e.g. in Message-ID:
<813ien$lf9$1@news.lucky.net>. Is it supposed to be in Ukrainian?
Should koi8-u be specified as a valid encoding for Russian?
I've made it ignored for relcom.talk, and it works, still it is not a
correct way to deal with the problem.

To get a faked support for reading messages in koi8-u, use the
following:
(define-coding-system-alias 'koi8-u 'koi8-r)
Real support for koi8-u could/should be added (but currently, it is
not achievable fully, as Emacs' internal encoding does not support the
letter ghe with upturn used in koi8-u).
If you will also need to read messages in windows-1251, add the
following lines:
(codepage-setup 1251)
(define-coding-system-alias 'windows-1251 'cp1251)
Similarly simple is to add support for cp866, etc. :)
Best regards, -- Vladimir.

I agree. It would be nice if gnus will have a variable which will
allow to chose the preferred charset to be used when posting on a
per-group basis.

Thanks; I've now added this (as well as the charset alias examples) to
the "Charsets" section in the manual.
