In the *Group* buffer, when all the topics are empty, then "j"
(gnus-group-jump-to-group) followed by a valid group just sits
there. Nothing happens. If I toggle hiding of empty topics (T H) then
the same key brings the required group in the buffer. This seems
counterintuitive. Is it how it is supposed to be?

Yup. Fix in Pterodactyl Gnus v0.98.1.
