I agree with you totally.

The only bits that really makes sense in handling separately (by
default) are attachments, really.  Everything else is meant to be
viewed as one complete, whole document -- just like HTML.  So I'm
defaulting gnus-unbuttonized-mime-types to (".*/.*"), which means that 
only the things that aren't displayed by default (either because they
are attachments or because Gnus doesn't know how to display them) will 
be buttonized in 0.52.
