Kai, I think this was on of of the German Newsgroups. ISTR us spending
about a week coming up with all kind of complicated suggestions and in
the end it was something *really* trivial -- can't remeber what is
was though :-)

maybe doing a 
  make distclean && ./configure && make EMAS=xemacs 

might help?
