Somewhere between 5.8.2 and 5.8.7, summary recentering forgot how to do
horizontal centering w/ FSF Emacs 20.4. That is, if a subject is > than
the width of the window, and you type C-e C-l, used to be that everything
would be shifted to the left so you could see the end of the line, and C-a
C-l would shift everything back. Not any more. I'll do some digging, see
if I can figure out exactly when this happened.

XEmacs 20.4 automatically performs horizontal centering on C-e and C-a, so
no problems there.

With

  http://quimby.gnus.org/gnus/dist/gnus.tar.gz

I still get Gnus Version 5.8.6, although the date says
"01-Jul-2000 13:12".

Version 5.8.7 is available from

  ftp://quimby.gnus.org/pub/gnus/gnus-5.8.7.tar.gz

dated "01-Jul-2000 13:11".

I found the change point. 5.8.4 does horizontal recentering on C-l in the
summary buffer, 5.8.5 does not. The bug is in gnus-sum.el, gnus-recenter
function:

(defun gnus-recenter (&optional n)
"Center point in window and redisplay frame.
Also do horizontal recentering."
  (interactive "P")
  (when (and nil

             gnus-auto-center-summary
             (not (eq gnus-auto-center-summary 'vertical)))

Will always return nil. Removing the nil so that the form reads

    (and gnus-auto-center-summary
         (not (eq gnus-auto-center-summary 'vertical)))

fixes it.

Would someone check this into the CVS tree? Thanks.

can someone explain to me the difference between GNUS (the old one ?), Gnus
(the newer one ?) and the one w/ Xemacs ? as I undertood in the web pages,
GNUS is dead, God saves Gnus :) but what about the Xemacs version ?

well. I'm running XEmacs 21.1 w/ Mule under a FreeBSD box. until the last week,
I was running GNUS (Gnus?) featured w/ XEmacs which is version 1.45 from the
XEmacs point of view. I upgrade this week end w/ some problem. one of them
was that I've apel/flim/semi installed which imply a conflict about the
mailcap.el library. XEmacs found the flim one before the gnus one. hue!
for instance, I rename the Gnus mailcap.el to mail-cap.el as well as requires
and provides. which is to be the real one ? another problam was the
installation procedure which is not so good from my oint of view. so I hack
the installation procedure from apel/flim/semi to Gnus to simplify the
installation process. are you interrested and do you have the right to
integrate it to Gnus ? the next step is to make gnus a FreeBSD port. not so
simple :(

the new installation procedure is here :

        <URL:http://clefevre.citeweb.net/gnusmk.tar.gz>

apel, flim and semi are there :

        <URL:ftp://ftp.etl.go.jp/pub/mule/apel/>
        <URL:ftp://ftp.etl.go.jp/pub/mule/flim/flim-1.12/>
        <URL:ftp://ftp.etl.go.jp/pub/mule/semi/semi-1.13-for-flim-1.12/>

PS : how to crosspost between different nntp servers ? is it possible ?

Well, GNUS is _very_ old. It latest version is 4.1 or 4.3 or so. And
then, Lars wrote (ding) Gnus which became Gnus 5.0. There were
various versions of Gnus 5.x, and as far as I know, the most recent
versions of Emacs and XEmacs come with Gnus 5.7, whereas the most
recent version of Gnus is 5.8. (Maybe XEmacs comes with Gnus 5.6,
which is more or less the same as 5.7.)

Semi is for dealing with MIME. As Gnus 5.8 also deals with MIME,
these two step on each other's toes. If you want to use Gnus 5.8, you
must disable Semi and TM and all other packages like it.

(I think it is possible to still use Semi for RMAIL, say, but you must
disable it for Gnus.)

Fwiw, I think there is a new version of Gnus (TGnus?) which was
created by the Semi team and which is based on 5.8 and which includes
additional Semi functionality. I'm not sure what exactly that is,
though.

well, I'll contact the XEmacs team about the integration of Gnus 5.8
to XEmacs.

I forgot to ask about pgnus ?

for instance, just renaming one of mailcap.el file resolve a major
conflict. as I understood, flim/semi are an evolution of tm, no ?

For what it's worth, there is a package of 5.8.7 either in beta or
released at the moment. Since you ask. :)

Development versions of Gnus are named. After Gnus 5.6 and 5.7, Lars
started with Pterodactyl Gnus (aka pgnus) which then became Gnus 5.8.

So, pgnus are older versions of Gnus 5.8.

Right. Gnus in cvs now check `nnimap-server-address' too.

(The variable was obsoleted 1998-12-04, guess it's too early to drop
support for it. :-))

Do you have any "default" lines in your ~/.authinfo file? Can you
check the copy in CVS (or fetch a snapshot later tonight) if it work?

For completeness, what's your entire .authinfo file (w/o passwords),
and what's your entire gnus-secondary-select-methods?

rats, that didn't help. My .authinfo now looks as above, all works OK
in 5.8.4 (and it also works OK in 5.8.6 on my machine at school
where I've apparently been more vigilant in keeping up versions...)

But it does not work under 5.8.7.

Nnimap used to have a hack that allowed you to specify the virtual
server name in .authinfo files, and nnimap tried to look up this name
("" in your case) -- and received the default entry back...

I've now removed the hack from cvs.

Also, the "port imap" statement shouldn't be required. (But doesn't
harm anything.)

I've been having problems with v5.8.7, too; my previous version
(updated from cvs on May 10 or so) worked fine. I've now gotten
things working, but I don't know why what I did should have helped.
Here's what I did: I deleted the "default" line from .authinfo. I
used to have

machine math.washington.edu login palmieri password BLAH
  default login anonymous password palmieri@math.washington.edu

With the latest version of gnus, it was passing "anonymous" as the
username and "palmieri@math.washington.edu" as the password, and so
the login was failing.

Now I have

machine math.washington.edu login palmieri password BLAH

and it seems to work. Adding "port imap" to the first line didn't
help, either. (In fact, when I did this with the old cvs version, it
stopped working--it started prompting me for my username and
password. Adding it to the end of the single line in my current
.authinfo file doesn't seem to have any effect, good or bad.)

A port option was added since 5.8.5. I guess you missed "port imap"
for the entry of ~/.authinfo file. For example,

machine imap.you.com login USER password PASSWD port imap

I'm now a few changes past 5.8.7 and don't see any problem. Strange.

Hm. I have the same situation, and it works. Strange. Here's the
last entry in lisp/ChangeLog:

I'll try to do a CVS update to see if this problem appears for me,
too. Then we know it must be in the last few changes.

The group names must be changed from nnimap:group to
nnimap+foo:group. This is not worth it, I think.

Um. I have the latter situation i.e. I have specified

(nnimap "" (nnimap-address "bar"))

(and the .authinfo entry is indeed 'machine bar').

I got nowhere by first trying to add 'foo' to the server definition;
any tips on how to proceed? (I guess 'foo' should be a virtual server
name? I wasn't able to access any of the imap mailboxes when I added
the virtual server name to my imap server command).

Hm. Does it help to frob the server name in ~/.authinfo? Suppose you
have (nnimap "foo" (nnimap-address "bar") ...) as server definition,
what happens if you put `machine foo' in there? `machine bar'? If
you have (nnimap "" (nnimap-address "bar")...), you can only use
`machine bar', of course.

Maybe something like this changed.

Sorry -- I hope I'm not missing something that is documnted.

Installing 5.8.7 seems to have made nnimap no longer look at my
~/.authinfo file. I didn't change any configuration -- it worked with
5.8.4, and now doesn't; I'm now prompted each time for username and
password.
