I just recently installed Gnus, and upgraded Emacs to a proper level, and am now experimenting with the package, meant to read and handle my email, essentially. I also have 2200 Babyl folders, containing in the order of 25000 messages, and plan to see how Gnus will help me for these. For me, it is a big change in paradygm. However, and a little sadly, a lot of RMAIL customization is gone, which I might have to reimplement. The pre-canned `nndoc+gnus-help:gnus-help' is a nice kind of welcome. The last entry: From lars Thu Feb 23 23:20:38 1995 From: larsi@ifi.uio.no (ding) Subject: Bugs & stuff Date: Fri Feb 24 13:40:45 1995 explains how to send a bug report, and also where to ask for questions, naming a mailing list for it. But I wonder if I should be part of this list for getting the replies, if any. The said article would be more helpful if it was either giving me a hint about how to subscribe to the `ding@ifi.uio.no' mailing list, or telling me that subscription is not necessary. In case I should be on the list, would some kind soul directly email me the recipe for doing so? Because it is new, I might have some difficulty, at least for a little while, sorting out what is a matter of discussion, and what should be reported as a bug, and if suggestions *may* be reported as bugs (as we often do in GNU). I'll presume yes. I would, of course, prefer that you locate the bug, fix it, and mail me the patches, but one can't have everything. That may come, but only later. The emergency for me is keeping the head out of the water, with all that email flowing in as I write :-). I'll start with simple matters and problems, as I meet them. Here are a few details: * This message was started with M-x gnus-bug. My .emacs file contains: (setq mail-self-blind t) but seemingly, no Bcc: was inserted in the header of this reply (I did it myself, by hand). Could Gnus comply with this variable as well? The `M-x m', outside Gnus, initializes the outgoing mail with the Bcc: header preset. * While composing this very message, I cut and pasted (using the keyboard, not the mouse), the following text from the *Article* buffer: From lars Thu Feb 23 23:20:38 1995 From: larsi@ifi.uio.no (ding) Subject: Bugs & stuff Date: Fri Feb 24 13:40:45 1995 and realized that the highlighting (which you probably do not see in this reply :-) was bleeding into the new text I wrote after it. This is not a big thing in itself. My usual reflex in such circumstances is typing `C-S-l' (hilit-repaint-command) to get things straight, but it was ineffective. (Highlighting disappeared when I refilled the bleeded in paragraph, using GNU fmt as an external process -- as the refilling is much better done this way.) Let me suggest that this `C-S-l' keybinding be usable while composing a message under Gnus. * Being used to move messages a lot between folders, and wanting to experiment a little around, I tried `B m' between two nnml groups. It seems that the moved message had the `O' flag *after* the move was completed, while I was expecting to find the moved message as unread. (The parallel is that when I move an already deleted message from one Babyl folder to another, it is not deleted anymore in the new folder.) Let me suggest that `B m' automatically recovers the *virginity* of a message while moving it elsewhere. ------------------ Environment follows ------------------ (setq gnus-default-nntp-server "") (setq gnus-select-method '(nnml "")) (setq gnus-show-mime t) (setq gnus-decode-encoded-word-method #[nil "À‡" [nil] 1]) (setq gnus-subscribe-newsgroup-method 'gnus-subscribe-alphabetically) (setq gnus-summary-mode-hook '(mc-install-read-mode)) (setq gnus-summary-prepare-exit-hook '(gnus-summary-expire-articles)) (setq gnus-startup-hook '(#[nil "ÀÁÂ\"ˆÀÁÃ\"ˆÄÀÆÂ\"‡" [remove-hook gnus-summary-prepare-hook hilit-rehighlight-buffer-quietly hilit-install-line-hooks (gnus-summary-mark-read-and-unread-as-read) gnus-mark-article-hook gnus-article-prepare-hook] 3])) (setq gnus-parse-headers-hook '(gnus-decode-rfc1522)) (setq gnus-exit-group-hook '(gnus-uu-delete-work-dir gnus-uu-clean-up)) (setq nnmail-split-methods '(("mail.linux-kernel" "^\\(To\\|Cc\\):.*linux-") ("mail.bpi.ln" "^\\(To\\|Cc\\):.*ln@") ("mail.gnu.gnits" "^\\(To\\|Cc\\):.*gnits@") ("mail.gnu.tar" "^\\(To\\|Cc\\):.*tar-\\|Subject:.* tar") ("mail.gnu.recode" "^\\(To\\|Cc\\):.*recode-\\|Subject:.* recode") ("mail.gnu.ptx" "^\\(To\\|Cc\\):.*ptx-\\|Subject:.* ptx") ("mail.gnu.wdiff" "^\\(To\\|Cc\\):.*wdiff-\\|Subject:.* wdiff") ("mail.junk.sans-intérêt" "^Subject:.*\\(soccer\\|volley.*ball\\)") ("mail.junk.sans-accents" "^From:.*\\(Louis-D.
