I'm not sure if it helps, but I use this `setq' command:

(setq gnus-group-line-format
      (if window-system
	  "%6,6~(cut 2)d %M%S%p%P%m%5y: %(%-60,60G%)%l\n"
	"%6,6~(cut 2)d %M%S%p%P%m%5y: %(%-60,60g%)%l\n"))
