Hi,

I'm using No Gnus v0.11 out of git as of yesterday. I'm using gmane as
my primary server, and have just subscribed to gmane.emacs.orgmode. That
group never has new articles in it, and when I enter it with C-u RET
100, gnus says 'fetching headers', but then says 'No unread news'. If I
enter it with C-u RET, it does download the 129000 headers and builds a
summary.

Where should I start looking? Other groups seem to be working fine.

Thanks

Robert

Perhaps the last 100 articles have been cancelled?

Doesn't look like it. If I look at that group using the gmane web
interface, the article count goes up to 30256, so either there's
something wrong with what gmane's delivering over nntp, or there's a
dodgy entry in a file somewhere on my system. I've tried killing and
resubscribing the group, but that makes no difference.

I've tried reading the group myself, and it works for me.

What is the real way to properly kill a group and remove ALL info? I
always end up editing the .newsrc.eld by hand and that is dangerous.

IMO "kill" should remove all data about the group.

`G E' lets you edit the info about the group...

So I've now tracked down the 3 places in the agent files and marks files
that had the wrong info for some reason, nuked those and now it seems
to work fine.

Should killing and resubscribing that group not have cleared up those
entries for me?

Robert

Perhaps. But killing a group is something you often do to move it
around in the group list, so it having any other (immediate) side
effects would be awkward.

It would certainly break one of my common gnus usage patterns.

Of course I spoke too soon:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (circular-list (([8096 "information/feature request: org analog to latex \\description envir

You seem to be hitting this code:

(defun gnus-sort-threads (threads)
  "Sort THREADS."
  (if (not gnus-thread-sort-functions)
      threads
    (gnus-message 8 "Sorting threads...")
    (prog1
	(condition-case nil
	    (let ((max-lisp-eval-depth (max max-lisp-eval-depth 5000)))
	      (gnus-sort-threads-recursive
	       threads (gnus-make-sort-function gnus-thread-sort-functions)))
;; Even after binding max-lisp-eval-depth, the recursive
;; sorter might fail for very long threads. In that case,
	  ;; try using a (less well-tested) non-recursive sorter.
(error (gnus-message 9 "Sorting threads with loop...")
		 (gnus-sort-threads-loop
		  threads (gnus-make-sort-function
			   gnus-thread-sort-functions))))
      (gnus-message 8 "Sorting threads...done"))))

I doubt that gnus-sort-threads-loop has ever actually been tested much.

Anyway, you seem to have some circular structures going on in some of
the threads, and Gnus seems to be unable to cut the loop.

OK. Is there anything I can do to remedy that?

Thanks

I'm unable to reproduce this in the orgmode group, so it's a bit
difficult to debug. Have a look at the contents of the " *nntpd*"
buffer after entering the group.
