I used to work on a very slow computer where Gnus took about 30 secs
just to read my mailbox. Xbiff was not enough for me, so I decided to
write my own mail monitoring utility that would display in a small
window a summary of my incoming email, with the possibility to sort
messages according to which mailing list they come from, etc., (à la
nnmail-split-methods).

I've used this utility (called xcheckmail) 2 years now, and this
summer I decided to revamp it slightly and make it available to anyone
interested, starting with this list since I think xcheckmail is quite
complementary to gnus.
