Oh, I think I know what you mean. I can't remember which client it was, but I do remember one that would distinguish between 'New' and 'Unread'. Hmmm.... I think if the 'Status:' header is 'R', then the message shows up as read. If it is 'O', then it shows up as 'Unread'. If it doesn't exist at all, then it is 'New'. I think that's right.
