Now I have 0 drafts in my folder, but each time I press `g' in the
group buffer, it shows 3 new messages. If I <space> the draft group, it
switches back to 0 until I press `g' again.

What happens with C-u SPC? Can you enter the group then?

No, it does the same: the number of unread articles switches back to 0
and I'm put on the next group with unread messages.
