For some reason, I can't read japanese messages anymore (especially
the ones that I get on xemacs-mule). More precisely, the subject is correctly
displayed (with whatever kanji, hiragana or anything that's in), but not the
body.
I think this started with pgnus 0.84. Does anybody else see this ?

The problem seems to be a gnus problem: loading the mail as a file in
XEmacs displays the japanese correctly. It's only in gnus that the
`Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-2022-JP' part doesn't seem to be
honored.

Yes, but... I use Gnus too, and I see it right. Or at least I think
it's right (I don't know Japanese.) I can mail you a screenshot if
you wish.

Not me. The xemacs-mule messages look all purty (and incomprehensible
:-) to me.

OK. Where should I look first ? How and when are the multipart/mixed;
treated ?

AFAICS, decoding the multiparts gives me several " *mm*" buffers.
Those buffers contain each japanese part, but *not decoded*. I've traced the
gnus-mime-display-* functions, but the encoding is never taken into account.
Is it normal that the " *mm*" buffers doesn't show the japanese
characters ? If so, when are those characters supposed to appear ?
Thx

Do you have a language environment set? If so, you should try without
one.

I got it. For some reason, enable-multibyte-characters was set to nil
in my XEmacs session. I haven't figured out what did it yet. All places where
gnus (temporarily) changes the default value seem to be properly
unwind-protect'ed.

After CTE decoding; that is -- when they are displayed by Gnus (or
whatever).

In `gnus-mime-display-alternative' in gnus-art.el, for instance.

Huh. I didn't think that variable had any effect in XEmacs...

It doesn't, as far as XEmacs is concerned. But if code A sets it to
nil, and code B checks whether it's nil, then there you have an
effect.
