Two questions about slashdot and setting levels:
1) I have a slashdot topic configured and my slashdot groups showing
up beneath it. The groups are showing up as level 3 (the default
subscribed level); I'd like to instead have it so that all nnslashdot
groups (or all groups under that topic) are level 5, say. How can I
configure that?
2) Even better would be if the slashdot webserver was not contacted at
_all_ (not even at gnus startup) until I specifically requested it.
Can this be configured? Is it just the same as above?
Thanks,
-Emerick

There is no predefined functionality for doing this.

If you don't have the slashdot server in your secondary select
methods, the groups will probably not be activated.

But if you don't want to see the /. groups in the, you can press RET
on the /. topic header to hide them.

But when will new groups be found, then?
Is it possible to mark a server as "denied" per default, until you
explicitly open it?

That's a good question.

(push '((nnslashdot "") denied) gnus-opened-servers)
But un-denying the server means going into the server buffer and
`R'-ing there.
I have nnslashdot as a secondary select method, and even though
Slashdot is often down, it doesn't really bother me much. When Gnus
hangs, I just `C-g' past it and continue with my work...
