All it can do is minimize the risk. If it *must* violate the standard, it should do so in a way that reduced the risk of collision, not in a way that increase it. That is, use something like "mid.gnus.org" as the right hand side, like Forte Agent does. In that case, it would not need to concern itself about conflicts with other software. However, I don't think the risk is worth violating the standard for.
