They haven't heard about them for years, and suspect they are nearly exclusively used by old time Unix users who can't be bothered to switch to something more recent. Especially zmail. I suspect the most popular user agent supporting X-Face is Xnews. I agree we should leave X-Face alone. However, googling for exmh showed that it supports an x-image-url header Gnus could support instead.
