Some tips for LISP programming with Gnus

Hi !

I would like to get some tips about LISP programming with Gnus. Could
some one point me to the revelant functions ?

- Is there a simple way of doing "echo 'bla bla' | mail
  machin@truc.com" using Gnus internal functions to send a mail ?

- Can I use custom "mark" (like a "read" mark) in the summary buffer ?

That depends on what you mean by "custom".  Without any idea what you are
trying to do... maybe.

Placing a special mark which is equivalent to a read mark but which is
none of the existing marks.

Equivalent in what way?  Tell us what end effect you're trying to
accomplish, rather than how you want to go about it; maybe there's an
easier way.

The "read" mark is an R, I would like to achieve a "read" mark with an
A (for example). But it will be considered like a read mark.

Hm.  Hmmm...  No, I think there is no built-in functionality in Gnus
for doing this.  You can, of course, hack it yourself.

But what does "considered" mean?  Considered by which parts of Gnus?
Would it mean that articles with this marks are not displayed by
default?  How would this mark interact with total-expire and
auto-expire?  Pretend the read mark doesn't exist, and then describe
all the properties you want this new mark to have.  And, again, tell
us what ultimate effect you want to achieve - what would you use this
mark for?  There may be an easier way to do it.

Probably a mark for which 'gnus-read-mark-p' return non-nil.

Vincent Bernat:  I suggest you do an 

        M-x apropos <ret> gnus-.*-mark <ret>

and look at the definitions of the functions and variables that look
promising.

I always use this:

          (gnus-setup-message
              'message
            (message-mail <to-address>
                          <subject>))   ;; sets up the message buffer
          (message-goto-body)           ;; places point into the body
                                        ;; region.
          (insert "bla bla")            ;; into the body
          (message-send-and-exit)       ;; sends the mail and cleans up

You may also be interested in gnus-posting-styles - for instance I play a
game that requires a logon and signoff.  Whenever I post from that
group ("mail/baha") the mail is pre-prepared....

Of course, it'd be kind of cool if "body" also accepted a file name.

My current pet peeve with gnus-posting-styles is that it seems you can't
specify the position of the `body' text. It always gets placed under the
quoted text, before the signature. I'd really love to have the
<multipart type=mixed... sign=pgpmime> stuff appear at the very top of
the message without using gnus-.*hook.
