That was the wrong choice, since you can't set "nil" as a group
parameters.  Instead I changed the code, documentation and
customization types to expect "native".  The code still accept "nil"
though.  

It is some tricky code, in involves some strange case I haven't
tested, so lots of thing can have gone wrong.
