No.

Yes.  In particular, it will break most if not all customizations you
have made to the mail and news compose modes.  They have been
integrated in a single package now.

Depend on what way you count as down (in computer science, trees grows
downward).  Sgnus should understand your (ding) `.newsrc.eld' file,
but not the other way around.
