I'm sorry--I see now that message-mode is using my .mailrc file, just
with abbreviation expansion instead of what I was used to.  I like this
actually! One more small complaint: if I change my .mailrc file,
message-mode doesn't seem to reread it in the current Emacs session.
There is something like mail-synch-aliases in sendmail.el that is
supposed to do this, so presumably you could use that.

Yup, me too.  And I've only used mail-aliases for a couple of weeks, out
of more than five years on the net ;)

Hmm, my combination of emacs19.33/red0.45 does reread the file when it
changes (before opening a new message, not in an already existing
message-window, as I just found out.)  This may be because of my newer
version of emacs, or in red gnus, I dunno.  You could always just put
mail-synch-aliases in message-setup-hook...

PS:  
I get an infinite loop (ok, so it terminates ;) ) using red 0.46,
especially when ^'ing articles...  Am I the only victim of this?  Yes, I
have reported it.

Of course, M-x rebuild-mail-abbrevs is pretty easy...

For once I may help! :-) For years, I've been using such code:


(defun maybe-reread-mail-aliases ()
  (let ((mailrc (expand-file-name "~/.mailrc")))
    (if (string-equal buffer-file-name mailrc)
	(rebuild-mail-abbrevs mailrc)))
  nil)

(add-hook 'write-file-hooks 'maybe-reread-mail-aliases)


So, I modify ~/.mailrc, and as soon as I do `C-x C-s' on it, changed
aliases are immediately usable in the message composition buffer.
