When a server is not available and a download is attempted, an error is displayed in the minibuffer with a y/n prompt - something like "Server is unavailable. Do you want to continue (y/n)?" If I'm not around to respond, gnus will wait for the keypress until I come in the next morning and type `y'. Meanwhile, while gnus is waiting, no mail is downloaded.
