The number of lines is reported as 0, and the date is reported at
18:00:00 on 12-31-69. 

The actual message contained lines, and the headers showed a current
date.

gnus-summary-line-format's value is 
"%U%R%z%([%5L: %-20,20f]%) [%~(cut-left 4)~(max-right 2)o-%~(cut-left 6)~(max-right 2)o-%~(cut-left 2)~(max-right 2)o %~(cut-left 9)~(max-right 2)o:%~(cut-left 11)~(max-right 2)o:%~(cut-left 13)~(max-right 2)o] %s\n"

All the cutting, etc., is to get a date format that I like.
