You didn't mention what OS/machine which is important when talking about XEmacs 20.0. Especially since similar problems have been reported (and fixed) on the alpha, I think. If you have problems with gnus in XEmacs 20.0, it's probably better to report them to the xemacs-beta@xemacs.org mailing list, than to the ding-list.
