Sounds like a problem with the nnmail-use-long-file-names variable.
It is probably set to nil, so it converts group names like
"arkiv.test" into the subdirectory arkiv/test. If you set
nnmail-use-long-file-names to non-nil, it will not convert group names
inot subdirectories.
Or, if you create the file arkive/test, gzip it, and restart gnus you
should be fine.
I don't believe you need to create the nnfolder group with the .gz
name. Just call it arkiv.test and it will do the right thing if the
arkiv/test (or arkiv.test) file is gzipped.
