What I wrote works fine in Emacs 21 (which was the point of doing it) and isn't used in Emacs 20 or XEmacs (where it won't work). That was essentially its purpose. If someone has broken it so that it affects you, take it up with them. I only use Gnus 5.9 in Emacs 21.
